The harsh world of Margaret Atwood’s totalitarian nation of Gilead has become more relevant in present-day America as women and other marginalized groups find their rights threatened and their voices challenged. The tale of handmaid June (Emmy-winner Elisabeth Moss) finding the courage to build a movement of resistance to the Gilead patriarchy in season 3 continues to resonate with the nation today, none more so than when the cast and crew found themselves shooting episode 6 (“Household”) in Washington D.C., on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the government shutdown. “There are moments in the show where the show and reality meld and there are moments where the line gets really blurry,” says Moss. “That day in D.C., shooting those scenes at that spot, the line just disappeared.”
