Album Review by EDF
Laurence “Lol” Tolhurst is a name that most Cure fans have not heard from in a while. Together with Robert Smith, they formed The Cure and the rest they say is history. Now out on his own, Lol has formed his latest project called Levinhurst and rightly revisits the sounds that made The Cure great in their formative years, a sound that other bands have borrowed recently. The other half of Levinhurst is Cindy Levinson whose vocals compliment the relentless synthesised beats and chords that at times sounds like Depeche Mode.
With Dayton Borders on board who layers the rest of the songs with some intriguing instrumental work, the landscape of each track enters a different time and place. Cindy comes from a Eurasian background and this subtly comes out from her vocal work. The tracks machine like beats reminds us that the world is relying too much on technology and perhaps Cindy’s vocals is our link back to the old uncomplicated world. Whether this is the album’s intention or not, this will please those who are into synthesised music but not necessary dance music.
