Album Review by EDF
One of the best things about the various titles the Hed Kandi team churn out year in year out is that you know what you’re getting. With BACK TO LOVE 03.05, the Kandi team take you back to 1989 and bring you some of the best house tunes that were kicking around back then. Like the rest of the releases in this series, this collection does the job in reminding you of tracks long forgotten and tracks long ignored.
The opening track on the first disc is DSK – ‘What Would We Do (Hurleys House Mix)’ lets us know that this is where the classic house dance party starts. Gems such as INNER CITY – ‘Big Fun (Original 12″ Mix)’ and TEN CITY – ‘Right Back To You (Extended Mix)’ sit comfortably with lesser-known tracks like THE FOG – ‘Been A Long Time (Gio’s Doped Mix)’ and the piano led JIMI POLO – ‘Better Days (Original 12″ Club Mix)’.
The second disc slows the pace down as we go from classic house to funkier sounds. Among the classic found here are NENEH CHERRY – ‘Buffalo Stance (Fast Pop Mix)’ and A TRIBE CALLED QUEST – ‘Can I Kick It (Extended Boilerhouse Mix)’. Other forgotten classics include FRANKIE KNUCKLES – ‘It’s Hard Sometimes (FK Classic Club)’ and CHICAGO – ‘Street Player.
Apparently, the sleeve notes mention that the Kandi team have exhausted their search for BACK TO LOVE tunes in this series. If this is true, 03.05 is a great send off to a great series of feel good tunes. Now, I wonder whether they will restart the nu cool series?
