Single Review by Mark Bayross
As their name suggests, this Scottish five piece are not without a sense of humour (their keyboard player is called Andy Wee Man, if further evidence were needed). They are also an eclectic bunch, as this three-track single demonstrates.
Sounding not dissimilar to “Brotherhood”-era New Order, HONEY and NOBODY WANTS TO BE REAL do a convincing job of showing off their way with a catchy indie-rock tune, while the track THE GRIM NORTHERN SOCIAL morphs from Radiohead-style jittery ambience to full-on space rock in epic fashion.
Ewan McFarlane’s vocals may take a bit of getting used to (with their slap-me-I’m-a-genius swagger of prime Tim Booth), but there are plenty of ideas vying for attention here, and that’s always to be applauded.
Look out for the debut album in the summer.
