Album Review by Mark Bayross
Following the tradition of Icelandic musicians taking their art to new levels, former Gus Gus vocalist Daniel Agust has joined the likes of Björk and Sigur Ros in releasing an album of haunting atmosphere and flashes of sonic magic.
Combining found sounds and Agust’s warm croon with a bed of electronics and bursts of cello, his debut album SWALLOWED A STAR is a beguiling record that evokes everyone from Martin Grech to Dead Can Dance and late period Talk Talk. This is music that illustrates the devastating natural drama of his homeland like a stripped-down baroque take on Björk’s HOMOGENIC.
This is spell-binding stuff, music for the heart and mind, and can’t fail to move you. By turns joyously uplifting and devastatingly melancholic, this is very highly recommended.
