ALONE IN VENICE is an upcoming independent film written, directed and produced by aspiring filmmaker Jules East.

Set for release in 2025, this new drama is a modern reversal of the Thomas Mann novel DEATH IN VENICE, exploring the theme of forbidden love, following the perspective and life of “the other man” and the complexity of falling in love with an older married woman.

According to the official synopsis, it tells the story of a young aspiring American actor, Saul Larson, who finds himself waiting in Venice, Italy for his director, a married Chinese woman with whom he is fervently in love with. Saul finds himself endlessly waiting in Venice for his director, questioning what love is, whilst she keeps making excuses and leaving him to wait alone. But finally, when the flood season comes, Saul receives a text message from his director… Will they finally meet in Venice? And what will come of their meeting?

The film stars Apollo Luce (Saul Larson), Lisa Jacqueline Starrett (Mia Jones) and Luca Rosini (Tommaso Greco).

According to Jules East, ALONE IN VENICE was created during a summer vacation with her friends in Venice, Italy. She continues, “As a Chinese filmmaker, I was mesmerized by the beauty of Venice and surprised to discover that among wealthy Chinese married women, it has become a trend to keep their Italian or other Caucasian lovers in this enchanting city above the sea. Inspired by Death in Venice, one of the most iconic films ever made in this city, I felt compelled to create a film about love—especially forbidden love.”

Distributor Freestyle Digital Media recently acquired the North American VOD (video on demand) rights to ALONE IN VENICE.

The film is set to be released on January 7th, 2025, and will be available to rent or own on all North American digital HD internet, cable and satellite platforms, including Amazon, iTunes, Google Play and YouTube Movies, as well as Cable and Satellite On Demand, plus DVD.
