When a movie stars the talented and beautiful Kate Hudson you know you won’t be disappointed. In this film she plays Andie Anderson, the columnist for the ‘How to…’ section at Composure Magazine and her latest project to research is ‘How to lose a guy in 10 days’ by doing all the things that women do to drive men away. Her boss (Bebe Neuwirth) is instantly attracted to this idea so Andie and her friends hit the bars and clubs in pursuit of their ‘victim’.
Meanwhile agency whiz kid Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey) is working on a campaign for a renowned jeweller to market his diamonds and during a meeting to clinch the ad account for himself ends up in a bet with his boss that he can make any girl fall in love with him in 10 days.
Naturally Andie and Benjamin’s paths cross at a bar and they get on famously. Then the fun starts as Andie has to try and lose her guy, in contrast to Benjamin who has to grin and bear everything that is thrown his way in order to keep this girl – well at least until a company ball in 10 days time to prove to his boss that he’s won!
This movie will give you a lot of laughs as the situations become more extreme and desperate as their relationship heads towards that tenth day in a hilarious struggle that would have most men running for cover. Both Hudson and McConaughey play their respective characters spot on, Hudson as the increasingly dependent female invading McConaughey’s bachelor lifestyle and he having to placate and forgive her eccentricities and insecurities.
Director Donald Petrie keeps the movie well paced and what’s refreshing are the tactics that Andie and Benjamin resort to – I bet most people can identify with some of the incidents that happen and perhaps have used them themselves or wanted to if they had the nerve!
