Movie Review by Nigel A. Messenger
Starring: Rob Schneider, Colleen Haskell, John C McGinley, Michael Caton
Director: Luke Greenfield
Rob Schneider plays Marvin a rookie cop who has a near fatal accident. He is rescued by an eccentric professor who uses animal parts to save his life.
Marvin soon becomes a hero using his animal senses to save the life of the mayor’s son but his problems soon become apparent as he begins to develop uncontrollable animal instincts that surface at all the wrong times.
Throw into the mix Marvin’s girlfriend Rianna (Colleen Haskell), a couple of buddies, a boss who wants to throw him off the force and a suspicious chief of police (Edward Asner) and you get a comedy with a simple storyline, some very silly but very funny jokes and an hour and a half of mindless laughter.
THE ANIMAL has lots of visual humour that you don’t have to think about and in a way could suit the whole family except for the abundance of sexual references which restricts it to teens and up. Watch out for the moment Marvin sees a gorgeous girl walk past in the street and what happens with the mail box.
An enjoyable if silly movie and a showcase for the visual comedy talents of Rob Schneider.
