If you liked the fragrant, warm-hued jollity of altruistic AMELIE ambling about the streets of Paris, Audrey Tautou may be the pull that brings you to see this new French thriller by first-time director Laetitia Colombani. Tautou plays Angelique, a young painter and student who has fallen in love with Luic (Samuel Le Bihan) a handsome cardiologist. All should be rosy – Luic, as Angelique tells her friends, is deeply in love with her too – but it soon emerges that their relationship is rather more complicated than the love affair we expect from a hazy-round-the-lens dewy-eyed photo of a Parisian couple in love strolling through the Jardin de Luxembourg (Athena poster style).
Luic is married, and what’s more he is about to become a father. But Angelique is determined to follow her heart’s desire and she’ll go to any lengths to keep him. With echos of FATAL ATTACTION the film turns from romantic drama to thriller, as the angelic Angelique casts her halo aside to pursue her lover and keep him in her clasp.
Tautou as always is lovely to watch with her Hepburnesque elf-like charm, but somehow, once the plot has been revealed, the movie rather loses its impetus.
