US band The Voodoo Kings are not quite what you would expect. While the band’s name might conjure up images of a Latin band, this group are far from it. They have a solid back beat thing going which seems to hint that they perform with a lot of energy. It has been recorded that their live shows include cover versions of artists from James Brown to Prince and a whole load of other stuff in between. The songs on this album also reveal a hint of blues and funk mainly thanks to the inclusion of trombone and saxophone players.
Lyrically the group enter Bruce Springsteen territory, as their every man lyrics will feel familiar to listeners. SAY GOODBYE (I HATE YOU) is a relationship break up song that for once is quite cheerful. WHEN I SEE HER and I’VE GIVEN UP showcases the energy that the group puts in and is a fair reflection of how tight they sound. On the other side of the spectrum, MEMPHIS NIGHTS proves that the group can do slow emotional songs. The lustful ANIMAL is made all the more raunchy by the horns melody in the chorus. With songs like the all out rock/funk of CAN YOU FEEL ME, it is a fair assumption to make that this THE VOODOO KINGS album is a bundle of energy on a silver disc.
