Album Review by EDF
Joe Cang is best remembered for being the bass player with Scritti Politti but since then he has enjoyed successful collaborations with other artists. His most famous post-Scritti Politti written track would be the massive Aswad hit SHINE. Cang has also co-written with the likes of Hall & Oates, Steel Pulse and Hugh Masekela and has toured with the likes of Ian Dury, Desmond Dekker and Kintone.
Cang plays most of the instruments on the album. The songs within are mostly your typical singer/songwriter type songs that emotionally have nowhere to hide. The production does not smother any of the songs, allowing them space to breathe. The overall tone does not remain the same either on this album. You can notice the difference a cello and tabla can make on LOST BALL. There is even a surprise on the South African like ONE FOR MARLON where the lead vocals are taking over by Cathy Battistessa. Even though this album won’t quite set the world on fire, it is reassuring that there are artists like Cang out there that will at least make you appreciate singer/songwriters even more and this album is also a pleasant way to pass the time.
